Find your hybrid's first smog year
Add eight to the model year. A 2020 hybrid first needs a renewal smog check in 2028, for example. Before then, you pay a smog abatement fee with your DMV renewal instead. When the check is due, your DMV renewal notice says so ("Smog Certification Required") and tells you whether it has to be at a STAR station.

Batteries and warning lights
After the battery is disconnected or replaced, or codes are cleared, the readiness monitors reset. Drive normally for a week or two before the test. With the check engine light on, a vehicle will not pass.
If it fails
Take it to a licensed test-and-repair or repair-only station you trust (BAR's Auto Shop Locator lists them). Some emissions repairs may be covered by your manufacturer's warranty, so check your owner's manual. Then our $30 smog retest applies within 30 days (how our retest works).
