What's on your report

The vehicle inspection report shows the results and whether the car passed or failed. It also lists any open safety recalls on the vehicle. Hang on to it: the repair station uses it, and so do we at the retest.

Four steps to a pass

  1. Choose a repair station

Pick a licensed test-and-repair or repair-only shop; BAR's Auto Shop Locator shows the options.

  2. Check the warranty

Some emissions repairs may be covered by your manufacturer's warranty. Check your owner's manual.

  3. Drive it

After a battery disconnect or cleared codes, a week or two of normal driving lets the readiness monitors reset.

  4. Retest here

Within 30 days of the failed inspection here: $21.75, plus the $8.25 certificate on a pass (how our retest works).

Why it can matter where you retest

If your renewal notice requires a STAR station, the retest must happen at one. The same goes for vehicles identified as gross polluters, which must be certified at a STAR station or a state Referee. We hold STAR certification, so you can retest here either way.

For the retest, bring

  • The car, repaired.
  • The failed report.
  • Your DMV notice or other documents DMV mailed you.

Makes we test

Jeeps, Nissans, Volvos and every other make: the list.

Frequently asked questions

What happens after a failed smog check?

You get a vehicle inspection report. The repair is done at a station you choose, then the car is retested.

Will my car fail with the check engine light on?

Yes. With the check engine light on, a vehicle will not pass.

Which repair shop should I use?

Any licensed test-and-repair or repair-only station you choose. BAR's Auto Shop Locator lists them.

Do I have to retest here?

No. If your notice requires a STAR station, the retest must be at one; otherwise any test-and-repair or test-only station works. We're STAR certified if you'd like to come back.

How much is the retest?

$21.75 for the test, with the $8.25 state certificate added only on a pass: $30 total. One retest per car, here, within 30 calendar days of the paid, failed inspection.
