The rules for a sale
- Seller's responsibility: the seller provides a valid smog certification.
- 90-day window: a smog certificate is good for 90 days.
- Newer vehicles: four model years old or newer, no smog check needed when sold; the new owner pays DMV a smog transfer fee.
- Family transfers: a spouse, domestic partner, child, grandchild, parent, grandparent or sibling transfer doesn't need a smog check. The exception: a relative who bought the car for you without titling it in their own name first means a smog check is required.

If it fails before the sale
The certificate requires a pass. We're test-only, so a licensed test-and-repair or repair-only station you select does the emissions work (BAR's Auto Shop Locator lists them). When it's done, our $30 smog retest applies within 30 days (how our retest works).
